About GLP-1 Agonist Therapy
What is it? Semaglutide is a once-weekly injectable Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 agonist) that is clinically proven to produce weight loss and is FDA Approved for use in treatment of being overweight or obese.
How does it work? Semaglutide decreases your appetite, causing you to eat less frequently and eat smaller amounts. It also delays gastric emptying, making you feel full longer. Finally, it reduces blood glucose by stimulating insulin secretion. These factors can help you lose weight and become healthier.
Who is a candidate? Anyone with a BMI >30, or anyone with a BMI > 27 along with at least one of the following: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnea, or type 2 diabetes.
Are there side effects? Side effects are not common, and when they occur they are typically mild and short-lived. Possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation. We typically begin with a smaller dose to minimize the chance of side effects.
Who should not use semaglutide? Anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, anyone with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia- 2, and anyone with known hypersensitivity to semaglutide or to any of the product components.

Dr. Ryan LaBuz is a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist providing medical weight loss services at Scientific Weight Loss in Las Vegas, Henderson, and all of Nevada.
Dr. LaBuz takes a holistic approach to his patients and gives them the tools necessary to achieve their goals. He takes the time to listen to his patients, provides education and counseling, and develops customized care plans.
A graduate of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, Dr. LaBuz earned his medical degree at Touro University Nevada, in Henderson, Nevada. He completed residency training at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts, before returning to Nevada. Dr. LaBuz maintains board certification in internal medicine from the American Board of Internal Medicine.
